Shangi and the Impala peninsula in general holds an immense lesson in Rwandan history. Its strategic position has made this place to be the battlefield for different occasions.  The first one was the famous battle of resistance against the colonials and the second one was the first world war battle between Belgians and Germans. This place is also known as the first place to host the first religious mass in 1899 by german catholic missionaries. The impala peninsula saw the graphic bloodshed in 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, but the light came after and now the place is one of the most prosperous and fertile region in Rwanda.

In 2015 Bushenge washing station was established with so many challenges of accessibility. In only two years, it gave birth to two other washing stations, Shangi and Kinunga washing station. The abundance of the coffee production of this region and the quality of the beans of the mountains of Bumazi, Remera and the beauty of rivers of Mushoroza and Nyamahembe. The most astonishing part of this zone is the resilience of its people. People of this district have overcome the hardship anyone can imagine after the 1994 Tutsi genocide. They came back stronger and united than ever before. In these few years we have been working with them, we can witness the unity and reconciliation of Shangi area.

Lastly, the view from the Kinunga washing station and surrounding farms will take away all your stress and just feel the coffee plantations, the view of the Kivu lake and the Ijwi island right in front of you.
